In today’s hyper-competitive, globalized business world, it is more important then ever for businesses to get the most productivity possible out of each and every one of their employees. Challenges to productivity include a variety of factors, including conflict. Although businesses may try to avoid conflict with processes and procedures such as comprehensive contracts, clear job descriptions, and well-delineated lines of authority, conflict within any organization is inevitable.
Accepting this, this paper will propose a conflict resolution program for Solectron Corporation. This program will seek to reduce the occurrence of conflicts, while also dealing with them as efficiently and effectively as possible when they do occur. A brief company overview will be presented, as well as who the target audience is for this program. In addition, this paper will discuss the concept of conflict, conflict resolution, as well as how this program will improve the company’s overall effectiveness.

Overview of Solectron Corporation:
Roy Kusumoto founded Solectron Corporation in 1977. The electronics assembly job shop offered manufacturing services to Silicon Valley companies, in need of peak-period and high quality service. In an effort to honor this commitment to quality, Solectron adopted the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award guidelines, and won the award two years after implementing these guidelines. (Epperson, 2004a) It followed up this incredible feat with being the first company to ever win this prestigious award for the second time, in 1997. (Epperson, 2004b)
During the 1990s Solectron expanded its operation from its original Milipitas, California location. Several manufacturing facilities were built or purchased around the globe. Locations included: Malaysia, Japan, France, England, Germany, and China. Some plant purchases included multi-year contracts with companies such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Philips Electronics. As the end of the millennium approached, Solectron’s growth pushed it into the #1 spot of the contract manufacturers industry. (Epperson, 2004a)
Today, Solectron offers an array of electronics manufacturing services unmatched by its competitors. Electronics big shots such as Hewlett-Packard, Nortel, Cisco, Apple, Ericsson, and IBM utilize Solectron’s contract manufacturing services to not only cut costs, but to improve quality. Solectron allows companies to focus on what they do best. This virtual organization can handle all facets of a product’s lifecycle. From product design, to prototyping, to manufacturing, marketing, distribution, and service, Solectron can provide the entire gamut of services. (Epperson, 2004b)
