Leadership Skills
We have seen and experienced that someone is there in a group who takes a chance to lead. An individual can be a leader because of the ability, situation, and recognition and so on. Being a leader means that they must be able to draw others to them through focused commitment, make dreams come alive and unite people behind those dreams, communicate through vivid models and examples, and know the extent of their skills and apply them effectively (Porter, Angle, & Allen, 2003).
It is necessary to direct the team towards the vision by guiding and inspiring them. Leaders are the role model for the entire team. They share their dreams with the team members and they have the capability to continuously reminding team members by communicating that vision. Every one of us is leader and we need to strive to be a good leader. Leader need to update their ideas and skills.
Qualities of a Good Leader
The qualities of a good leader are a makeup of the individual and the environmental factors. There can be our social influences that can also shape us our behavior. Leaders possess the qualities to guide people. To be a leader there needs to be follower and they possess qualities such as actions oriented, empowering, communication, self awareness, genuineness and supportive. Successful leaders inspire the team by making them feel significant. Learning and competence are highly valued, and workers feel they’re part of a genuine team or family.
Leader pushes their team to move forward. They identify the need to change and find the way to make it happen. They are the social influence to many other followers. The most influential leaders motivate their people through joint identification with collective goals rather than through forcing to meet his/her personal goals. These sets of leadership qualities is in most of the people but the skills get strengthen in the course of interaction with people in the society. Learning is a continuous process and in the course of daily life interaction, these qualities get improved and the person can effectively lead the people. The leader need to have qualities such as dedication, sense of vision, presentable, ethical concerns, risk taker, self management, self awareness, social awareness, relationship management and determination (Prati, Douglas, R. Ferris, Ammeter, & Buckley, 2003).
As mentioned in (Bachiochi, O'Connor, & Rogelberg, 2000), team leader must be able to communicate the idea with the team, trust the team, inspire them to work to get that dream, facilitate, instruct and guide the team, believe in team. Leaders want to see positive change in them as well as in the team members.
Overall, the effective leaders should possess qualities such as passion, energy, selfconfidence, empathy, vision, dedication, ethical, genuineness, actionoriented and communicating. Among these qualities, I believe I am ethical, dedicated, have vision, with full energy and action oriented. I strive to be a better person today than yesterday and I am full of positive mind, continuous learner and dedicated in my vision of being a successful business professional.
Personal Vision and Personal Values
I see myself as a Business Manager in Tourism sector in near future. At current, I am preparing with my full concentration, dedication and energy to realize my vision. I want to be a part of reputed organization which is related to Business tourism. (H. Humphrey, 2002) mentions that personal values help us to find the purpose and passion in our life. It is the deepest values and our priority. Personal values encompass what you want to have in your life, what you want to do and the person you want to be. My personal values are that I want to earn Masters degree in Business, be with family, and be a Business Manager in top business organization in Nepal. Personal values can be changed with time and through the external influence but this will help us create a picture of us of near future. This will greatly affect our thinking process and we begin to follow the path that can help us acquire personal vision (Barton, 2011).
My personal vision aligns with personal values. My personal values include being an inspiration to my juniors and colleagues. I am caring, supportive and have creative mind. I want to keep myself busy and I enjoy interaction with people. My passion is to work as a Business Manager. I am excited with working in service sector. In five years time, I would also have a BBA degree and I would already have a professional exposure of working in business organization. To be a successful business manager, I need to have academic qualification as well as experience. I believe that the main reason for choosing Business and Tourism field for my future career is because of my personal values. Therefore, my personal vision aligns with personal values.
Organizational Climate and Ethics in Leadership
Manning & Curtis, (2012) describe that there are three variables of leadership, characteristics of a leader, quality of a follower and nature of situations. Organizational culture means the set of shared values, system and culture in an organization. The climate is shaped by the employees in the organization making system for day to day activities. It is shaped over the time. There are different leadership styles and some are task oriented, other is result oriented. The diversity of the people, the culture of the place and the people’s culture tend to influence organizational culture.
To be an effective leader, they need to respect the cultural diversity of its people. They must be dynamic, open and continuous learner. Leaders must be able to behave understanding different perspectives (Manning & Curtis, 2012). Leaders are the role model . They need to be a motivational factor for other to do the work, to follow the standards and respect other people in an organization. Leader has a great role of making organizational climate with full of healthy competition and growth of every people. Organizational climate can influence the leadership style. For example, leadership style of leader in Japanese company can be different to that of American company. Therefore, the nature of situation plays a huge impact on having a better leadership period.
Ethics is the set of moral values that a person develops through knowledge or experience. People differentiate between right and wrong through the set of ethical considerations. Leaders need to be ethical. Their action will be followed by other people so at all time they need to be ethical. Every people want to be a part of ethical company.
My Leadership Style and Empowerment
There is different leadership style and I would follow participatory leadership style. Leaders of this category prioritize the members and they try to create a solid base for the team. This style will help everyone be a leader and it helps in the empowerment of the members. Participatory leaders enjoy the bigger goal together. Participatory leaders will work with great dedication to know what is required to get our goal. Not only leaders but the followers can also know the details.
