Abstract
Madeleine Leininger is the founder of transcultural nursing theory. This paper is focused on the essential feature of her theory. The discussion provided is to show how the theory was developed and its evolvement in the past decades. She is known mostly because of her theory which has impacted the clinical settings. Her theory came up from the clinical experience recognizing that culture was a missing link in the nursing knowledge and practice.
Introduction
Dr. Madeleine Leininger was born in Nebraska. She received her first diploma in nursing in the year 1948 from St. Anthony School of Nursing Denver in Colorado. She received her B.S from St. Scholastica in Kansa in the year 1950. She finished her M.S in psychiatric and mental nursing from Catholic University located in America Washington, D.C in the year 1954. In the year 1965, she received her Ph.D. in cultural and social anthropology from Washington University, Seattle (Leninger, 1994).
She realized the importance of caring in her nursing during her early stages of her nursing care. Frequent questions from the patient care made her focus on the care as a central component of the nursing profession. She experienced a cultural shock in the year 1950s while working in a children guidance home (Alligood, 2013). She observed that a recurrent behavioral pattern in children seemed to have a cultural basis. She identified lack of cultural and knowledge care as the missing link to nursing understanding the many changes needed in the patient care to help them in healing and wellness. All these insights helped her to come with a phenomenon related to nursing care known as transcultural nursing. Therefore, she came up with transcultural movement in education research and practices (Fawcett et al., 2012).
Contribution to Nursing Profession
Many nursing institutions have benefited from the work of Leininger. Initially, many nursing fields were just practicing cultural norms of medicine, and only a few envisioned that the field of nursing could become a powerful and independent discipline with a transcultural nursing care. Thanks to her theory, the nursing profession as attained the transcultural goal and independence (Alligood, 2013).
She has done a lot of research that is used in the various nursing institutions. Through her publications, journals and books, her message has reached a big number of people globally. She was a lecturer, and she taught nursing students on the importance of her theory and many more ethics related to the profession of nursing. Her research and theory has led to the discovery of many new unknown cultures and nursing care knowledge. The findings are a breakthrough in health care and nursing (Robinson, 2013).
Culture Care Diversity and Universality Theory
It is important to appreciate each other background and know how it plays a role in shaping the health of the patient. Therefore, there need for cultural competence so as to ensure patients receive satisfying and improved healthcare.
While it is necessary to look at the patient as an individual who is whole from the perspective of psychological, social, physiological and spiritual, it is also important to consider his/her cultural background and culture when figuring ways to take care of that patient (Robinson, 2013). After all, the beliefs and values passed from generation to generation of the patient can have a greater effect on the health of that patient and a reaction to treatment and the environment of the patient and social life. The theory developed by Madeleine Leininger is now a nursing discipline that is an important part on how the nurses practice in the current field of healthcare.
This theory falls in both the general practice and the specialty. It has developed into a nursing discipline (Almutairi et al., 2015). It tries to give culturally congruent nursing care through cognitively based facilitative, assistive, supportive or enabling the acts and decisions that are mostly tailor made to fit with individual, institution’s or group’s way of life, cultural values and beliefs (Chinn et al., 2013). The objective of the care is to assist fit with or have advantageous and the outcome of health for people of similar of different background of culture. The culturally congruent care can be achieved when various things in the nurse- patient relationship are followed: both the nurse and the patient creatively come up with a new care lifestyle for well-being and health of the patient. This process requires the use of both professional and generic knowledge and the ways to meet those ideas into the nursing care actions and goals. The care knowledge and the skills are both used for the best interest of the patients. Therefore, all care models require the participation of both the patient and the nurse (Catolico, 2013). They have to work together to plan, identify, implement and analyze each mode of caring for the culturally congruent nursing care. These modes can make the nurses plan actions and decisions through utilizing the new knowledge and ways to give satisfying meaningful and wholistic care that is satisfying to the individual, groups or institutions based on the culture.
