The paper analyses the global challenges of the new millennium: The food price crisis, the financial and economic crisis as well as the ecological crisis. The crisis affect the world´s population, but in some regions such as South Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa, the impacts are disastrous. Food security is threatened and poverty and inequality increase. Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which among other things tend to halve between 1990 and 2015 the proportion of people who suffer from hunger and malnutrition, is moving further away. These developments and current challenges are of serious concern and an opportunity for change.

Objectives and Topics

This paper examines the interconnected global challenges of the new millennium—specifically the food price, financial/economic, and ecological crises—and their detrimental impact on global food security. The primary research focus is to demonstrate that empowering women and addressing gender-based constraints is an essential, transformative strategy to mitigate these crises, improve agricultural productivity, and combat poverty in developing regions.

  • The triad of global crises: Food price, financial, and ecological volatility.
  • The role of the Global Hunger Index (GHI) in tracking malnutrition and inequality.
  • Feminization of agriculture and gendered barriers to productive resources.
  • Strategic approaches to gender mainstreaming in development policies.
  • Case studies on empowering women in South Asian agriculture.

Excerpt from the Book

4.1 Gendered-specific implications of the crisis

There is a gendered-dimension in the implications of the crisis. Women and men experience the impacts differently and unequally, so that women are affected disproportionately. Currently, worldwide about 60 per cent of undernourished people are women and girls (FAO 2013, p. 4). The following part points out their major sources of vulnerability concerning the food price crisis, the financial and economic crisis and the ecological crisis.

Food price crisis

An increased volatility of food prices and higher prices relative to income affects women disproportionately. Due the high obstacles women face as well as their high dependency ratio, among poor households the number of female-headed households is relatively high (FAO 2013, p. 12). Due to women´s lower educational level and wage disparities between men and women, also the economic opportunities decrease. Their purchasing power lowers, so that rising prices have a severe impact on them.

To provide enough food for the family, other expenses have to be cut down. In order to reduce educational related expenses, girls are usually removed from school first. (FAO 2013, p.12). As already stated above, the lower educational level has a negative impact on economic opportunities and makes them more vulnerable to future crisis, creating a vicious circle.

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction: Outlines the global hunger problem, the three major crises of the new millennium, and the thesis that empowering women is key to achieving food security.

2. The crisis of the new millennium: Details the three overlapping crises (food price, financial, and ecological) that have created global instability and exacerbated food shortages.

3. Global Hunger Index: Explains the IFPRI's GHI tool as a mechanism for measuring hunger and tracking regional progress in the fight against malnutrition.

4. The impact on human development: Discusses how global crises hinder development, focusing on disproportionate impacts on women and girls and the gendered dimension of food insecurity.

5. Gender and Development: Reviews the evolution from "Women in Development" (WID) to the current "Gender and Development" (GAD) approach and the importance of gender mainstreaming.

6. Innovative approaches to achieve food security and gender equality in South Asia: Analyzes specific initiatives in Bangladesh and India that transform gender roles to combat malnutrition.

7. Conclusion: Summarizes the findings and reaffirms that gender equality is a fundamental requirement for sustainable development and long-term food security.

8. Bibliography: Lists the academic, institutional, and research-based sources used to support the analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core subject of this paper?

The paper addresses the global food security crisis and argues that empowering women is a critical, often overlooked instrument for achieving sustainable food production and eradicating hunger.

What are the primary crises analyzed?

The work focuses on three overlapping crises of the new millennium: the food price crisis, the global financial and economic crisis, and the ecological crisis driven by climate change.

What is the main goal of the research?

The primary goal is to demonstrate that gender-based inequalities in agriculture and social life must be addressed to solve the global food crisis and to alleviate poverty, particularly in the Global South.

Which methodology does the author employ?

The author uses a qualitative and comparative analysis based on statistical data from the FAO and IFPRI, combined with a review of development theories like WID and GAD to frame the argument.

What topics are covered in the main section of the paper?

The main sections cover the nature of global crises, the utility of the Global Hunger Index, the socioeconomic impacts on women, the evolution of gender development frameworks, and specific case studies from South Asia.

What are the essential keywords defining this work?

The work is defined by concepts such as food security, gender mainstreaming, the feminization of agriculture, and the GHI, highlighting the intersection of social equity and economic survival.

How does the "feminization of agriculture" affect food security?

The paper explains that as men move to non-farm jobs, women are increasingly becoming the primary food producers. If their access to resources (land, credit, training) is limited due to gender bias, overall agricultural yields suffer.

What specific interventions are highlighted in South Asia?

The paper highlights the "Homestead Food Production" program by Helen Keller International in Bangladesh and the "Inner Spaces Outer Faces" project in India as examples of transforming gender relations to improve household nutrition.

Why is the GHI significant in this analysis?

The GHI provides a quantitative baseline to identify that South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa are among the most severely affected regions, linking high hunger levels with high gender inequality.
