Introduction: This chapter sets the stage by discussing the impact of disruptive innovation on established corporations, emphasizing the increasing need for leaders adept at implementing organizational practices that maximize potential. The chapter introduces disruptive leadership as a leadership style that integrates disruptive innovation, highlighting the importance of planning, research, innovation, and relationships with subordinates and customers. The chapter further explores the need to understand subordinate reactions to disruptive leadership and the behavioral traits of a disruptive leader.
Constant Research: This section stresses the importance of constant research for maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly changing technological environment. It emphasizes the need for farsighted leaders who actively seek new ideas and foster creativity within their organizations. A key aspect is heavy investment in research and development to stay ahead of the curve and leverage new possibilities. It argues for creating a culture where employees feel comfortable voicing their opinions on new ideas, emphasizing the leader's role in valuing and incorporating this feedback. The importance of appreciating constructive criticism to encourage open communication and freedom of opinion is emphasized. The idea that an open environment for communication is key to innovation is stressed.
Bottom Up Innovation: This section explores the effectiveness of bottom-up innovation, where responsibility for innovation is pushed down to lower levels of the organization. It argues that this approach enhances employee commitment and creates a more effective system for creating new ideas that work. However, it also acknowledges the value of top-down innovation and advocates for using a combination of both approaches to maximize potential. It notes that leadership support for bottom-up innovation is critical for success and that leaders should actively sponsor and empower initiatives generated at the grassroots level.
