Globalization in basic terms is a process that permits the human society interacts and integrates with people, organizations, and governments of diverse states across the globe. Globalization as a process, the driving force is the international trade and investment and it is backed by the advent of technological advancements, the internet of things, IoT and information technology in matters data and information circulation around the world. Globalization has made transformations on nearly all aspects of the modern life people lead in the community and the scope ranges from the jobs and how they are done, culture, relationships, the language, among others. In essence, the advent of the computer, rapid air transport, and the recent development in social media, and smartphone technology coupled with portable PCs including laptops have made the world much more accessible through the internet enabled devices and methods of communication and data sharing.
The term community could also refer to the term society, which a social order in which families exists. One community could comprise of people sharing the same cultural values, language, and other important aspects. Small family units make a up a single community that could have a number of neighborhoods and the community functions based on the available space, resources, cultural practices, and the generally accepted way of leading life. A community is most composed of people who live, work, and accomplish many other social life engagements including education, marriage, and spirituality within the community and neighboring urban areas (Nowell and Boyd 2014, p.230). Communities in one religion my vary form the other one in a different region based on the cultural practice and general way of life. A community could have only a single or a few cultures or ethnic groups, but globalization could open up to a myriad of possibilities in terms of ethnicity and cultural diversity. Globalization has transformed nearly all area s of modern life within the community (jobs, culture, and relationships) and it brings new stresses, new challenges, and new opportunities. Impact on the concept of community
There are many ways globalization has led to a shift from traditional, geographically- founded communities to more diverse and globally connected communities. Globalization has very effects that include transformation as sense of being part of a global village as opposed to the traditional regional and territorial areas. Today availability of goods and job opportunities has transformed the society in a manner that will forever change things around and this move has both pros and cons. From traditional farming or local trade, globalization has opened up markets in the communities, particularly in the less developed states of the world. The changes are affecting family and community life. In particular reports indicate that there has been a growth in migrant workers and it is estimated that the shift presently represents nearly 5% of the world population. Today, family system is not as usual, few fathers work from within their community and many work abroad only coming once in a while to see their families. It is supposed in some areas one or both partners either work of a multinationals within or outside their own traditional or local settings. It implies that some of such people are always travelling and moving from one location to the next as the job demands and thus some have become global citizens in some way. Despite this, globalization has also given right to a number of notable international and crossborder marriages and the number is rising. Today one inter-marriage might likely be an international marriage involving for instance a German national and South African national. Today the turned is leading to mixed cultures in communities.
Globalization as seen has numerous pros and also a few cons that affect communities in terms of community cohesion and support. The sense of being part of one big global village is a great advantage as people can access goods and services from across the world at the comfort of their seats. Today, online shopping rates have taken over traditional shopping and it is estimated that nearly 40% of all shopping today occurs online ((Rao 2016). Today many local communities have been opened up to global markets where foods from farms find their easy to foreign markets in an easy way. Through online procurement and payment platforms, farms and buyers can make transactions and sale agreements easily without having to travel to such destinations. The move has increased income among families and individuals and this is raising the living standards among people in different parts of the world (Rao 2016). The platform has opened up new doors where people can work in different parts of the world and as a result there has been a growth in migrant workers where many now send money back home through platforms like Western Union, PayPal among others. The move is many local communities and families thrive on a new scale since the income is always higher and more accommodative for all family needs.
Despite the pros, globalization has many cons that affect family cohesion and support. To start with, the act of opening up local communities as new markets for the global asset up in less developed states has had a devastating impact to local industries as multinational companies (MNCs) produce products have replaced those from local industries. The other element is that the idea that many multinational companies act as independent entities of some sort and in some instances, local regulations fail to curtail their wrong engagements. The freedom from scrutiny and regulations has made many engage in all manner of negative actions that affect the people from the communities in which they operate. For example, the MNCs offer short term contacts and the jobs are always insecure with highly poor working conditions where workers also work for long hours for less pay (Collins 2015). The growth in migrant workers that face challenges that include fewer human rights access, lower living standards in some cases and this includes poor access to medical care as well as reduced access to proper legal protection. Globalization has caused many families in communities to split up as one or both of the couples in some cases work an MNC in a different part of the world and the other in another part of the world. The situation has inevitably put strains on such marital and family relationships despite the possibilities of increased revenues. Moreover kids suffer and fail to get god parental upbringing since kids from such home where both parents work abroad are sometimes left in the hand s of caregivers and some instances were kids go their parents, they are cut off from social life for a long time as they adapt to new environments with new people, new culture and languages. Impact on the experience of community
Globalization has brought people from different cultures and backgrounds together, leading to increased diversity within communities. Today, it is reported that many multinationals employ a diverse number of people from all walks of life and from different parts of the world. Such people meet in hotels, field works and occupations in rural and urban areas. The move makes people interact and exchange cultural values. Globalization has made people learn new languages and get exposed to different cultures of the world as they explore opportunities for tourism, business among others (Rao 2016). Such developments have given people new experiences that were not there before and hence they help individuals access products through online shopping, engage and participate in different cultures through access to and purchase of different cuisines from around the world freely and easily. Today intermarriage is flouring where different nationalities find it easy to become couples and live in between their mother lands without feeling lost.
