In William Shakespeare`s drama The Merchant of Venice, certain characters are getting more and more involved into the action of the play. That takes place in a manner which might give the reader or spectator the impression that some characters even change their character traits. According to Manfred Pfister, figures who “undergo a process of development in the course of the text” (Pfister 1991: 177f.) are called dynamic. “Their […] features change, either in a continuous process or in disjointed series of jumps” (Pfister 1991: 177f.). Static characters, however, remain static throughout the play and do never change. Only “the receiver`s perception of them may gradually develop, change or expand under the influence […] of information” (Pfister 1991: 177f.). In this essay, Portia of Belmont shall be focused on by giving an outline of her character and on this basis it shall be analysed whether she is a static character or not.

It establishes the distinction between static and dynamic characters according to literary theory, using Manfred Pfister's definition as a framework. The essay's objective is clearly stated: to examine Portia's character and analyze whether she fits the definition of a static character. This introduction directly frames the central question and methodology of the entire essay.
Portia's Initial Presentation: This section introduces Portia through the perspectives of others, particularly Bassanio, who portrays her as an idealized woman of beauty, virtue, and high social standing. However, the section contrasts this external view with Portia's own internal experience, revealing her melancholic state stemming from her father's will and the restrictive conditions imposed upon her marriage. The contrast between her outward presentation and inner feelings lays the groundwork for a deeper examination of her complexity. This section highlights the initial paradox of Portia's character: a seemingly enviable position juxtaposed with deep-seated unhappiness.
Portia's Character and Judgement of Suitors: This section delves into Portia's interactions with her suitors. Her judgments of them reveal her personal values and preferences, showcasing her intelligence, wit, and discerning nature. By critiquing the shallowness or arrogance of the Prince of Morocco and the Prince of Arragon, Portia subtly reveals her own intellectual depth and strong sense of self. This section adds significant layers to her character, presenting her as someone with clear expectations and high standards, beyond mere wealth or status.
Portia's Relationship with Bassanio: This part focuses on Portia's relationship with Bassanio, showcasing a significant shift in her demeanor. The initial coldness towards her previous suitors is replaced by a warmth and eagerness in her interactions with Bassanio. However, even in this affection, elements of her complex nature are displayed. Despite her overwhelming desire for Bassanio, she subtly asserts her independence and power dynamics within their relationship through the ring plot. This section demonstrates a change in Portia’s behavior but also reveals that even in love, she maintains a degree of agency and control.
Portia's Actions in Venice and Conclusion (excluding the final conclusion): This section highlights Portia's pivotal role in the resolution of the play's central conflict. Her disguise as a lawyer and her legal brilliance save Antonio's life and dramatically reshape the narrative. This showcases her intelligence, resourcefulness, and active participation in shaping events, contrasting with her earlier more passive role. Portia's actions in Venice demonstrate a significant shift from a passive to an extremely active and powerful role in the drama. The essay concludes this section by showing her assertive nature even within her marriage.
