Mit hervorragenden Leistungen glänzte er in der Schule und durchlief Universitäten, bis er seinen Doktortitel erlangte. Sein Vater, ein Pastor einer Baptistenkirche, welcher nach den Werten des Christentums lebte und niemals Hass predigte, und auch Mahatma Gandhi, der durch friedliche Proteste Indien zur Unabhängigkeit verhalf, waren seine Vorbilder.
